How the commission process works

Every portrait is created by hand using professional artist-quality pencils and carefully selected reference photographs. Below you'll find a step-by-step guide explaining what to expect from your initial enquiry through to receiving your finished artwork.

Commissions are currently closed and are expected to open in 2027.

In the meantime, you're welcome to browse the gallery, learn how the commission process works and join the waiting list to be notified when books reopen.

STEP ONE - MEDIA AND SIZES

The first step is to decide what type and size portrait you would like to commission. I create portraits in both graphite and coloured pencils and in a selection of sizes. The best place to start is to take a look at my price guide which gives you the portrait options available.

I am happy to quote for other sizes if you are looking for something that isn't listed. And if you have any other questions please get in touch.

STEP TWO - REFERENCE PHOTO

To produce a high quality portrait I will need a high quality picture to work from. The clearer and more detailed your photograph, the more detail I can capture in your portrait. I prefer to work from digital photographs but I am happy to work from hard copies if required. I understand that in some cases, such as memorial pieces, the choice of photos may be limited. I can work from poorer quality pictures on the understanding that the drawing will not be as detailed as some of my other work.

STEP THREE - CONTACT ME

Once you have made your choice, the next step is to get in touch with your requirements. You can do this using my contact form or by email if you prefer. You'll find all the details on my contact page.

Please include:

  • the subject you'd like drawn

  • preferred size

  • reference photographs

  • any deadline

I usually have a waiting list but I will try to accommodate for special occasions where I can.

STEP FOUR - PAYMENT

Once we've discussed your requirements and you're happy to proceed, a 25% booking fee is required to secure your commission slot. Should I be in the unfortunate position where I need to cancel your order I will refund your booking fee in full.

The remaining balance will be due on completion of the commission.

STEP FIVE - PROGRESS

I will contact you when I'm ready to begin your portrait. During the process I will send you updates which will give you the opportunity to provide feedback and request any reasonable adjustments.

If you prefer I will not post the progress shots on social media until you have received the portrait. If the piece is a surprise I will wait until it has been gifted so please be sure to tell me.

STEP SIX - COMPLETION

Once the portrait is complete I will email a final photograph for your approval.

Once you're happy with the finished artwork the remaining balance becomes payable.

Your portrait will then be carefully packaged and sent using a tracked, insured delivery service.

Delivery is currently available to UK mainland addresses only.

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or you are looking for something that is not listed, I will always endeavour help where I can. I am happy to give advice about reference photos, styles of portraits that will work best for you and the commission process, with no obligation to order. If you have any questions, I'd be delighted to help.
